Windows Autopilot, so new laptops set themselves up

With Autopilot, a new laptop goes straight from the supplier to the person who will use it. On first sign-in it joins your organisation, enrols in Intune and installs your apps and security settings. Nobody builds it by hand.

What we set up

  • Registration of new devices to your tenant, ideally by the supplier at purchase, and by hardware hash for laptops already in use.
  • A user-driven Autopilot profile with Microsoft Entra join, the approach Microsoft recommends for new devices.
  • An Enrollment Status Page that holds the user at a progress screen until security tools and day-one apps are installed. We keep that list short, because every required app is another chance for setup to stall.
  • Applications packaged for Intune, including Microsoft 365 Apps and your line-of-business software.
  • Company branding on the sign-in screen, so staff know they are in the right place.

What staff do

Unbox the laptop, connect to the internet and sign in with their work email address. Windows does the rest while they wait at the progress screen. We tell them to start on a good connection, not five minutes before a meeting.

What we check first

Laptops still registered to a previous provider's or parent company's tenant have to be released there first. Windows Home editions aren't supported. Licences have to be assigned before anyone can enrol. We pilot every Autopilot change on a spare device or two before a new starter receives theirs. The full order of work is in our Intune and Autopilot rollout guide.
